How Some Rich Hindus in Houston are Helping the Poorest of the Poor in Nepal Villages

FREE MEDICAL CAMP Organized in Fall 2009 in Nepal

With the financial contributions from NRNs worldwide, a Free Medical Camp (the “Camp”) was organized by Simara Social-Welfare Foundation (the “Foundation”) at Sisautiya Village in Sarlahi District on October 20, 2009 (Kartik 3, 2066). This event was jointly coordinated by Dr. Vijay Jha (Founder of Simara Social-Welfare Foundation), Mr. Ratan Jha (Newly elected General Secretary of NRNA-ICC) and Dr. Rabindra Prasad Sah (a noted Ophthalmologist at Lumbini Eye Hospital, Bhairahwa).

Approximately 600 people, mostly the poorest of the poors, dalits and women, from Sisautiya and the neighboring villages benefited from this free medical camp. Some 20 volunteer doctors specializing in different fields of medical practices, i.e., Ophthalmology, Pediatric, Gynecology, Orthopedics and General Medicine, provided their services to the attendees of the Camp. Free medicines were also provided to patients as per doctor’s prescriptions. Out of more than 250 patients who came specifically for ailments related to eyes, 56 were diagnosed for cataract surgery. These 56 eye patients were taken to a nearby hospital in Malangwa for the cataract removal surgery at the sole expenses and coordination of the Foundation.

The various organizations which participated in this free Camp are: Janaki Medical College - Janakpur, Lumbini Eye Hospital – Bhairahwa, Netrajyoti Sangh – Lahan (Siraha), Sarlahi Eye Center – Malangwa, Bjarang Youth Committee – Sisautiya, and some individual doctors and nurses from Sisautiya Health Post. The Foundation and the Coordinators of this Camp heartily thank the donors, volunteers and doctors, without whom it was not possible to organize this medical camp.

While admitting that Gandhi never made claims of sainthood, George Orwell in his essay, 'Reflections on Gandhi' (1949), did not hesitate to reject sainthood as an ideal : "The essence of being human is that one does not seek perfection, that one is sometimes willing to commit sins for the sake of loyalty, that one does not push asceticism to the point where it makes friendly intercourse impossible, and that one is prepared in the end to be defeated and broken up by life, which is the inevitable price of fastening one's love upon other human individuals."

We Wholeheartedly Suport the Medical Care Reforms of the Obama Administratiion

What is the use of being a superpower and the richest country in the world when we can not even give free medical care to the people who can not afford to pay for it??
If you are travelling to India, carry your OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card along with old passport where the OCI visa is stamped, even if the old passport has expired. Some people have been deported for not carrying their old passport.

What is Religion? Why must we support the installation of idols in Hindu temples?

These idols help us to focus our thoughts on God. However, we must remember that God does not reside in these idols that are simply a vehicle to help us focus our thoughts on God. As Chanakya says, God resides in the feelings of the devotees. The essence of religion is asceticism and renunciation and not excessive indulgence in rituals. Rituals are fine as long as one does not indulge in them too much. Superstition and blind faith are worse.

Whatever you do for others, especially for the weak and poor, is religion. Whatever you do for yourself, including efforts to secure name and fame and wealth is not religion. Some people claim to be religious but they are always trying to gain name and fame by making connections with politicians and powerful people in the media including socalled swamis and babas who make enormous amounts of money through TV shows. He who is running after wealth and name and fame is not at all religious. He who has inflated ego is not religious. A truly religious person forgives even his enemy. He or she is humble. He or she does not run after fame or wealth.

If you do not take care of your parents in old age, if you do not help the poor and the weak, you will go to hell. Performing aarti in front of idols every day is not going to save you from the torments of hell.

How to live like a Sanyasin (ascetic)

This is what is written about Lord Chaitanya, the guru of the ISKCON devotees, "Chaitanya was extremely dispassionate. He abandoned all sorts of sensual pleasures as poison. He was very strict in observing the rules of Sannyasa. He declined to grant an interview to Raja Pratap Rudra of Orissa, because it is a great sin for a Sannyasin to see a king. It is as sinful as looking at a woman. If a Sannyasin sees a Raja or a king, gradually he will be attached to the Raja. As the mind has the habit of imitating, the Sannyasin also will begin to lead a life of luxury and have a downfall eventually. That is the reason why a Sannyasin is prohibited from seeing a Raja. Gauranga never saw a woman in the face. He did not allow any woman to approach him. He slept on the ground with bare body."

    The Mission of www.HinduTempleHouston.Net
We support and promote all Hindu sects. However our special love is reserved for the temples of Sri Krishna and Srimati Radha Rani, Lord Rama and Sita, Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, Goddess Kali, Goddess Saraswati, Sri Ganesh, and Sri Hanuman.

Installation of statues of deities in temples and worship of God in front of these deities constitutes the essence of the Hindu way of worship. For the common man and woman, it is very difficult to worship a formless God. The idols of gods and goddesses help us to focus our thoughts on God.
