Ragging is Most Shameful act committed by University Students

On July 8, 2006, the website www.ibnlive.com reported about a most shameful incident at Santiniketan. The following was mentioned on the website:

" The sanctity of Rabindranath's Visva Bharati has been violated yet again, this time by a group of the university's girl students.

Their victim is a first-year undergraduate arts student of Sangeet Bhavan. She was allegedly forced into group sex by some of her roommates and an outsider in the hostel last Sunday. "

By the time she was released, the girl was in a state of physical and mental trauma.

I personally have a very bad memory of the ragging that I endured when I entered the prestigious IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) at Kharagpur in 1965. My senior students who lived in Azad Hall, treated me so badly, and insulted me so much that I quit the institute, took the train and went back to my home town in Bihar state.

I was fortunate that a friend of my grandfather advised me not to quit IIT and upon his advice, I took the next train and returned to the institute.

Had I not met this friend of my grandfather, I would have ended up quitting the institute.

The authorities in the universities and institutes of higher learning all acrosss India must do their duty and stamp out this scourge of of ragging.
